Types and cameras of wedding photography

Added: 11/28/2005

Hiring a photographer for a wedding is an option without comment. However, modern photography is such a developed technology and complicated "science" that you can be confused either about a photography type or a camera to choose. It is clear that your wedding photographer should be professional, while it will be a very time consuming process if you ask him to explain everything about photography. Why not learn it prior your visit to a photographer and be ready for your wedding photography discussion?

First, you should know what types of wedding photography there are. Here you can meet photojournalistic (candid) wedding photography, traditional wedding photography, artistic wedding photography and mixed style wedding photography. Let us go into each type in detail, in order for you to determine which one is more appropriate for you.

A photojournalistic wedding photographer captures a wedding day the way similar to a newspaper photojournalist. Consequently, you will have wedding photos angled, candid and original. These photos are also known as documentary style wedding photos and can be taken from the beginning till the end of the wedding day, when the subject of photography are all guests, a bride and a groom, and their families.

Traditional wedding photography is where the subjects are a bride and a groom. A wedding photographer of this kind will present you with the photos of a formal style and you should pose before each photo is taken.

Artistic wedding photography has a variety of styles on its own. Generally, this photography is called artistic, since the photographers use various materials and decor for the background to make a photo.

Normally most of wedding photographers have a hand in all photography types; therefore, you can have wedding photos of all styles from the very photographer you will hire. It will be your mixed style wedding photography.

Now let us devote some time to wedding photographer cameras. There are four types of cameras, used in wedding photography: digital cameras, medium format cameras, 35mm cameras and large format cameras.

Digital cameras are in use only for a few years, while the benefits of them are obvious. A digital camera's quality is as good as a film, allowing faster turn-a-around times, it can easily switch color photos to black and white, can easily remove miner imperfections, there is no set film speed and it can adjust to low lighting after the photo is taken. Today, many photographers have moved to using digital cameras at weddings; nevertheless, the price for such photos is as high as their quality. A digital camera can produce all types of wedding photos, described above.
Some photographers use medium format cameras for wedding photography, which can produce large photos, though professionals consider them irrelevant for photojournalistic wedding photography. Photographers mostly use 35mm cameras for photojournalistic wedding photography, which are able to fix fast actions.

Large format cameras can be only appropriate for making a bride and groom's photo in the studio, prior to the wedding. It is not convenient to use them at the wedding.

Finally, about the colors. Although color pictures have substituted black and white photos long ago, many couples still prefer both of them. You can use black and white photos to add an old and romantic touch to your wedding album, while color pictures show details and action. If your wedding photographer uses a digital camera, you can order both black and white, and color pictures, since the camera provides color shooting along with black and white.

Keeping in mind all the information and tips about the world of wedding photography and cameras, you are ready to go to your favorite photo studio and arrange your wedding as an expert.
